Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Sioux Falls?
For most private residential tree removals in Sioux Falls, no permit is required. If the tree is on your private property — in your yard, backyard, or away from the street right-of-way — you generally have the right to remove it without city approval.
However, there are important exceptions you need to know about.
Right-of-Way Trees (Boulevard Trees)
Trees planted in the boulevard — the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street — are regulated by the City of Sioux Falls. These trees are considered city trees even if they are in front of your property. You cannot remove them without city approval.
If a boulevard tree is dead, diseased, or hazardous, contact the City of Sioux Falls Forestry Division to report it. The city handles boulevard tree removal. Do not attempt to remove it yourself.
HOA Rules
If your property is part of a homeowners association, your HOA covenants may require you to get approval before removing trees, even on your own lot. Check your HOA rules before scheduling tree removal. HOA violations can result in fines even if the city has no permit requirement.
What About EAB-Affected Ash Trees?
There are no special permits required to remove EAB-affected ash trees on private property. However, there may be restrictions on moving ash wood out of certain quarantine zones to prevent spreading the beetle. Your tree removal company should be aware of these regulations.
